Used GE Frame 6B and 7EA Gas Turbines: Buyer's Guide to the Heavy-Frame Workhorses

While aeroderivatives get attention for speed and efficiency, GE heavy-frame machines remain the backbone of industrial power worldwide, and two models dominate secondary market activity in their size classes: the Frame 6B at approximately 40 to 44 MW, and the Frame 7EA at approximately 85 MW. Both are rugged, long-lived machines with enormous installed fleets, deep spares availability, and an independent service ecosystem that keeps operating costs competitive decades after manufacture.

The Frame 6B: The Universal Industrial Machine

The Frame 6B runs at a shaft speed above synchronous and drives its generator through a load gear, which means the same core machine can serve both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets, a rare and valuable trait in the used market. It burns a wide range of fuels, tolerates harsh environments, and anchors refineries, petrochemical plants, and industrial cogeneration facilities on every continent. Units equipped with DLN 1.0 dry low NOx combustion meet emissions requirements in most jurisdictions without water injection; older diffusion-flame units may need combustion upgrades to permit in strict air districts, which should be priced into any acquisition.

The Frame 7EA: 60 Hz Workhorse at Scale

The 7EA is a direct-drive 60 Hz machine with one of the largest installed fleets of any gas turbine in its class in North America. That fleet depth matters to buyers: parts, repair technology, qualified shops, and experienced operators are all abundant, and a well-maintained 7EA can run economically for decades. For peaking, industrial baseload, and behind-the-meter applications where roughly 85 MW blocks fit the load, a verified used 7EA is often the fastest cost-effective path to capacity.

What to Verify on a Used Heavy Frame

  • Combustion system: DLN configuration and controls version, since this drives both permitting and upgrade cost.

  • Rotor life: heavy-frame rotors have defined life limits in hours and starts, and rotor end-of-life inspection or replacement is a major cost event that must be positioned in the price.

  • Outage history: scope and quality of the last major and hot gas path inspections, and which shop performed them.

  • Scope of supply: generator, load gear where applicable, auxiliaries, controls, and any station equipment included in the package.

  • Title, storage condition, and proof of life verified before funds move.
